DDK-205: Use the batch log messages in the database to produce the batch "log" and remove the redundant logging

NOTE: This MR does not remove the defunct paperclip columns from the batches table in the database. I would like to wrap that change into migrating the metadata file uploads to ActiveStorage (or something else), so we can remove paperclip in one fell swoop.
